Pour-Over for Beginners: A Simple 5-Step Guide

Pour-over looks fancy. It isn't. It's hot water, poured slowly, into a cup that smells amazing.
The quick specs
- Ratio: about 1:16, or roughly 22 g of coffee to 350 g of water.
- Grind: medium, like table salt.
- Water: 195-205°F, so just off the boil.
- Time: about 3 minutes.
Step by step
- Rinse the filter. Pour hot water through it, then toss that water. It warms your mug too.
- Add the grounds. Give the dripper a little shake so the bed is level.
- Bloom. Pour just enough water to wet the grounds and wait 30 seconds. You'll see it puff up.
- Pour in slow circles. Add the rest of the water in a few rounds, starting in the middle.
- Finish around 3 minutes. If you grind at home and it drips through too fast, grind a little finer. Too slow? Go coarser. Bought pre-ground? Standard grind works well. For more control, pick Whole Bean and grind at home.
A tip for flavored coffee
Pour-over is clean and light-bodied, so flavor shines through. Try Vanilla Hazelnut with a small splash of milk.
